  WINNER

THE ARTIST

NOMINEES:
THE DESCENDANTS
EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE
THE HELP
HUGO
MIDNIGHT IN PARIS
MONEYBALL
THE TREE OF LIFE
WAR HORSE

As expected, THE ARTIST emerged as a well-deserved winner here!

BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN DIRECTING

WINNER

Michel Hazanavicius (THE ARTIST)

NOMINEES:
Woody Allen (MIDNIGHT IN PARIS)
Terrence Malick (THE TREE OF LIFE)
Alexander Payne (THE DESCENDANTS)
Martin Scorcese (HUGO)

It's Michel Hazanavicius vs. Alexander Payne! I'm happy to know that Hazanavicius grabbed a well-deserved win here.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

WINNER

Jean Dujardin (THE ARTIST)

NOMINEES:
Demian Bichir (A BETTER LIFE)
George Clooney (THE DESCENDANTS)
Gary Oldman (TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY)
Brad Pitt (MONEYBALL)

It's Jean Dujardin vs. George Clooney. But the Academy made the right choice to award Jean Dujardin for his charming performance as George Valentin in THE ARTIST, which also made him the first Frenchman to win the coveted Oscar for Best Actor!

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

WINNER

Meryl Streep (THE IRON LADY)

NOMINEES:
Glenn Close (ALBERT NOBBS)
Rooney Mara (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO)
Viola Davis (THE HELP)
Michelle Williams (MY WEEK WITH MARILYN)

This category is narrowed down between Viola Davis or Meryl Streep for the win. Many might have rooted for Viola Davis to nab the Oscar here, especially given her recent winning streak in other awards. But Meryl Streep has finally broke the jinx after being nominated for a record 12th time since 1983's SILKWOOD, with her spot-on performance as Margaret Thatcher in THE IRON LADY.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

WINNER

Christopher Plummer (BEGINNERS)

NOMINEES:
Kenneth Branagh (MY WEEK WITH MARILYN)
Jonah Hill (MONEYBALL)
Nick Nolte (WARRIOR)
Max von Sydow (EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE)

Another shoo-in win. Enough said.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

WINNER

Octavia Spencer (THE HELP)

NOMINEES:
Berenice Bejo (THE ARTIST)
Jessica Chastain (THE HELP)
Melissa McCarthy (BRIDESMAIDS)
Janet McTeer (ALBERT NOBBS)

No surprise here. Octavia Spencer is a shoo-in win for this category.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM OF THE YEAR

WINNER

RANGO

NOMINEES:
A CAT IN PARIS
CHICO & RITA
KUNG FU PANDA 2
PUSS IN BOOTS

A shoo-in win. Gore Verbinski's loving tribute to the classic western is an inventive and colorful animated feature is worthy of an award here.

BEST WRITING, SCREENPLAY WRITTEN DIRECTLY FOR THE SCREEN

WINNER

Woody Allen (MIDNIGHT IN PARIS)

NOMINEES:
Michel Hazanavicius (THE ARTIST)
Kristen Wiig, Annie Mumolo (BRIDESMAIDS)
J.C. Chandor (MARGIN CALL)
Woody Allen (MIDNIGHT IN PARIS)
Asghar Farhadi (A SEPARATION)

Another undeserved win. While many have hailed MIDNIGHT IN PARIS is Allen's finest movie he's ever made in years, I beg to differ. (read: overrated). Personally Michel Hazanavicus or Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo should bag the win instead.

BEST WRITING, SCREENPLAY BASED ON MATERIAL PREVIOUSLY PRODUCED OR PUBLISHED

WINNER

Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, Jim Rash (THE DESCENDANTS)

NOMINEES:
John Logan (HUGO)
George Clooney, Grant Heslov, Beau Willimon (THE IDES OF MARCH)
Steven Zaillian, Aaron Sorkin, Stan Chervin (MONEYBALL)
Bridget O'Connor, Peter Straughan (TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY)

THE DESCENDANTS is a hugely overrated movie with sadly average plot. Of all the nominees in this category here, I think Steven Zaillian, Aaron Sorkin, and Stan Chervin should win this instead for crafting a unpopular subject matter into something intriguing in MONEYBALL.

BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN EDITING

WINNER

Angus Wall, Kirk Baxter (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO)

NOMINEES:
Anne-Sophie Bion, Michel Hazanavicius (THE ARTIST)
Kevin Tent (THE DESCENDANTS)
Thelma Schoonmaker (HUGO)
Christopher Tellefsen (MONEYBALL)

WINNER

Ludovic Bource (THE ARTIST)

NOMINEES:
John Williams (THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN)
Howard Shore (HUGO)
Alberto Iglesias (TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY)
John Williams (WAR HORSE)

Ludovic Bource's layered score is one of the best accomplishments that drives the artistic success of THE ARTIST. Bravo!

BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN CINEMATOGRAPHY

WINNER

Robert Richardson (HUGO)

NOMINEES:
Guillaume Schiffman (THE ARTIST)
Jeff Cronenworth (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO)
Emmanuel Lubezki (THE TREE OF LIFE)
Janusz Kaminski (WAR HORSE)

Robert Richardson won Best Cinematography for HUGO? As good as he is, I still figured either Jeff Cronenworth or Emmanuel Lubezki deserved a better win here.

BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN ART DIRECTION

WINNER

Dante Ferretti, Francesca Lo Schiavo (HUGO)

NOMINEES:
Laurence Bennett, Robert Gould (THE ARTIST)
Stuart Craig, Stephenie McMillan (HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS, PART 2)
Anne Seibel, Helene Dubreuil (MIDNIGHT IN PARIS)
Rick Carter, Lee Sandales (WAR HORSE)

BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN COSTUME DESIGN

WINNER

Mark Bridges (THE ARTIST)

NOMINEES:
Lisy Christl (ANONYMOUS)
Sandy Powell (HUGO)
Michael O'Connor (JANE EYRE)
Arianne Phillips (W.E.)

Mark Bridge's splendid recreation of the 1920s glamorous fashion in THE ARTIST is a well-deserved win here.

BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN VISUAL EFFECTS

WINNER

Robert Legato, John Williams, Ben Grossman, Alex Henning (HUGO)

NOMINEES:
Tim Burke, David Vickery, Greg Butler, John Richardson (HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS, PART 2)
Erik Nash, John Rosengrant, Danny Gordon Taylor, Swen Gillberg (REAL STEEL)
Joe Letteri, Dan Lemmon, R. Christopher White, Daniel Barrett (RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES)
Scott Farrar, Scott Benza, Matthew E. Butler, John Frazier (TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON)

This is really a surprise. I was expecting RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES would be a shoo-in win for this category. But HUGO? Seriously?

BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN MAKEUP

WINNER

Mark Coulier, J. Roy Helland (THE IRON LADY)

NOMINEES:
Martial Corneville, Lynn Johnson, Matthew W. Mungle (ALBERT NOBBS)
Nick Dudman, Amanda Knight, Lisa Tomblin (HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS, PART 2)

Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland's excellent makeup effect over Meryl Streep's character as Margaret Thatcher is spot-on convincing. A well-deserved win.

BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN SOUND MIXING

WINNER

Tom Fleischman, John Midgley (HUGO)

NOMINEES:
David Parker, Michael Semanick, Ren Klyce, Bo Persson (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO)
Deb Adair, Ron Bochar, David Giammarco, Ed Novick (MONEYBALL)
Greg P. Russell, Gary Summers, Jeffrey J. Haboush, Peter J. Devlin (TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON)
Gary Rydstrom, Andy Nelson, Tom Johnson, Stuart Wilson (WAR HORSE)

BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN SOUND EDITING

WINNER

Philip Stockton, Eugene Gearty (HUGO)

NOMINEES:
Lon Bender, Victor Ray Ennis (DRIVE)
Ren Klyce (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO)
Ethan Van der Ryn, Erik Aadahl (TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON)
Richard Hymns, Gary Rydstrom (WAR HORSE)

Is Jay Chou Out Of The Picture From THE VIRAL FACTOR Sequel?

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 08:26 AM PST

Currently THE VIRAL FACTOR is doing well in the box-office, and a sequel plan is already in talks. But there's a speculating rumor that one of the main stars, Jay Chou, will be dropped from the cast list of THE VIRAL FACTOR sequel.

Apparently he is said to be lacking in martial-arts training and underperformed with lots of NG (no good) takes. Not only that, he made demanding requests on-set and worried a lot about his wig. He also requested the director (Dante Lam) to make him "look good" during the non-action scenes, while insisting on using stunt double for ferocious fighting scenes.

Investors are looking forward to bring in Donnie Yen or Andy Lau to replace Jay Chou in the sequel to boost box-office sales.

Despite all the rumors surrounding Jay Chou's highly-demanding attitude and the sequel plan for THE VIRAL FACTOR, Jay's recording company JVR Music claimed that they have not heard of plans for making a sequel, and added that Jay once said that he will be filming any action movies in the coming future.

Yaarukku Theriyum Tamil Movie Preview

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 08:26 AM PST

It is a regular formula that universally most of the movie contributes on one hero-heroine-villain concept. To ultimately change such a concept was the sunrise of the movie yarukku theriyum. The film casting 7 characters, makes sure that they do not identify each other. Even the fans would find it typical to assume who are the characters in the beginning. Such characterisations, dramatisations and twists carry forward the movie. Director Ganesan Kamaraj is student of Director Bagyaraj. Bagyaraj ties a knot in the climax and he reveals the knot only through his screenplay. So as the same is in this movie, the screenplay in the beginning does not forecast on characterisation. The last scenes reveals the knots and brings out the thrill of the movie. The director has kept up such speed ups and twists in the movie. Making it out after the sunset, the entire movie is shot after 6pm. The American standard time was to be followed by the crew throughout the shoot. Some actors had to work in other few movies during their day time and work with this movie in the night time. This shows their strive to work for this movie, sometimes with loss of sleep which an incomparable task.

Nishanth, Dilip, Achutha, Harish Raja, Sanjana, Kalabavan Mani and jayaprakash are casting, making this movie the most thrilled one. This could happen to be a trend-setter movie for first time in Tamil film industry. Given importance to the story, The yaruku theriyum movie is planned to be released in 3 languages including tamil. Mahesh K Dev with three cameras has done a legible cinematography. After the making of tamil padam music composer Kannan has given an entry to this movie. The stunts have been out by Super subbaraayan, Art direction by BL DEva, Line producer Krishnamurthy have been taking cares respectively. Producer Sridhar speaks"When Ganeshan Kamaraj said the story to me I marked 13 places to plunge my quest. But in the last 15 minutes of the movie, screenplay by the director had the answers of its own way. Fans watching this movie would be enthralled with the same feel. Yarukku theriyum will a full feast to the fans."

Krish 2 in Hyderabad city

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 08:27 AM PST

Unlike other actors of Bollywood, Hrithik Roshan doesn't love sticking to usual cinema and instead always strives to do something different. Although his recent release Agneepath was an usual commercial drama style, it boasted of his herculean performance that no other actor to compete with.

While films were little mediocre before few years, his father Rakesh Roshan gave couple of consecutive hits = Koi Mil Gaya and its sequel Krrish. With the latter one re-establishing Hrithik Roshan as the most prominent superhero actor, his father Rakesh is now shooting the Krrish-2 that will have more bonanzas in technical and narrative aspects. The film has promising star-casts like Priyanka Chopra and Vivek Oberoi, who plays negative role.

Major portions of the films are shot in Hyderabad Film City.

Karthik awaits Rajini’s approval for Kochadaiyaan

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 08:30 AM PST

Singer Karthik
Popular playback singer Karthik is also debuting as a music director with the Vasanthabalan-directed classic Aravaan set in the backdrop of a few centuries back in time. Starring Aadhi, Dhansika and Pasupathy in lead roles, the film's audio had been released long ago and has been appreciated by movie-goers. However, Karthik is still apprehensive as he awaits audiences' response in theatres to his music and background score.
Karthik hasn't yet taken up another assignment after Aravaan to score music as he hadn't been narrated any decent scripts so far. In a 'first' and what could turn out to be the most important song-recording session in his career, Karthik had flown to Mumbai recently and sung a song for superstarRajinikanth which would feature in his upcoming film titled Kochadaiyaan.
Needless to add that it was A.R. Rahman, the film's music director, who insisted that Karthik should sing the song for Rajini. The superstar reportedly wanted SPB, who has sung many amazing hit numbers for him, to sing the song. Though Rahman agreed to it, he had reportedly convinced Rajini and Soundarya that they would have to first listen to the song recorded in the voice of Karthik before deciding about retaining it in the film.
The duet, penned by veteran lyricist Vaali, has been recorded in Karthik's voice in Mumbai. Only afterRajini listens to the song would it be known as to whether or not the song would find a place in the film's final version or whether the song is re-recorded in the voice of the ever-green SPB. Three songs have so far been recorded for the film, it is learnt, with Vairamuthu penning the other two. A song each would be penned by Madan Gorky and Naa Muthukumar, it is reported.

Oscars 2012: Best film ‘The Artist’ sweeps five Oscars

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 08:27 AM PST

French love story "The Artist" became the first silent film to win the best picture Oscar in 83 years as it scooped five honours at the Academy awards where veteran Meryl Streep was crowned the best actress.

The Academy paid tribute to its own roots by awarding the black and white film, which triumphed over the big names like Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen, to win the top award. The last silent film to win the best picture Oscar was "Wings" in 1929.

Director Michel Hazanavicius and Jean Dujardin walked away with the best director and actor trophies.

"I am the happiest director in the world. I want to thank the financier, the crazy person who put money in the movie," said Hazanavicius, 44.

"The Artist" beat eight rivals for the top prize, including Martin Scorsese's "Hugo", Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" and "The Help". Scorsese's "Hugo" tied up with "The Artist" by winning five trophies in technical categories on Sunday night.

Streep, the most nominated actress in the Academy history with 17 nods, looked dazzling as she accepted her third Oscar and her first in the last 30 years for her portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady."

The 62-year-old star previously won for 1979 film "Kramer vs Kramer" and 1982's "Sophie's Choice".

"Oh my God! thank you so much. When they called my name, I had the feeling I could hear half of America going, 'oh, come on, her again?," Streep said while accepting the statuette to a standing ovation.

"I really understand I'll never be up here again," Streep said as she thanked her husband, make-up artist and friends.

Dujardin, who plays silent hero George Valentin who fades as talkies make their presence felt in Hollywood, beat George Clooney and Brad Pitt to win the best actor honour.

"Oh! thank you. I love your country," said 39-year-old Dujardin as he thanked silent movie star Douglas Fairbanks for inspiration. © http://post.jagran.com/

‘3’ movie sale through open Auction

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 08:30 AM PST

Dhanush 3 latest poster
Director-producer Kasturi Raja(father of Dhanush) is planning to put his upcoming production venture 3 up for sale through auction process. The film stars his son and actor Dhanush in the lead opposite the stunning Shruti Haasan. It also marks the directorial debut of Kasturi Raja's daughter-in-law Aishwarya who has directed her husband for the first time on-screen.

The film has caught the attention of music lovers and movie-goers not only in Tamil Nadu but in other parts of the country as well thanks to the hugely popular number Why this Kolaveri di… penned and sung by Dhanush himself. The song, which received a record 15 million hits on the YouTube last year, was awarded the 'golden star' by YouTube. The popularity of the song also resulted in Dhanush and Shruti getting separate invites to dine with the Hon'ble Prime Minister at New Delhi.

The film has music by debutant music director Anirudh. Thanks to the huge popularity of the above-cited song, the film would now be released simultaneously in its Tamil, Telugu and Hindi (really!) versions. Distributors across the State and elsewhere have reportedly been vying with each other to secure the film's distribution rights for Rs.50 crores!
Apparently to drum up more funds by way of selling the film for its distribution and theatrical release, Kastrui Raja has decided to put the film for sale at an 'auction' where the NSC distribution circle and other distribution zones would be finalized at 'hefty' rates! Many years back, Dhanush's Thiruda Thirudi was also put on auction for the distributors to bid for the same.
